Many workplaces also have procedures addressing fitness for duty, cannabis, medications, testing, reporting concerns and substance use.
But having a policy is not the same as understanding it.
Supervisors and managers are often expected to apply these policies without the background they need to confidently explain why the requirements are in place.
Employees may know what the policy says, but not understand the reasons behind it or how it applies to the decisions they make at work.
For a limited number of organizations, we are offering three months access at no fee to one existing FFD Learning course of your choice.
The goal is simple: give your organization an opportunity to use the education with your employees, supervisors and managers, see how it works in your workplace, and decide whether this type of education adds value to your safety program.
*There is no obligation to continue after the three months.
We want workplaces to experience what stronger understanding can bring to their safety program.
Understanding is what turns policy into practice.
It is not enough to tell employees that substance use disorders are health conditions or encourage them to seek help.
Supervisors and coworkers also need the understanding to reduce stigma, respond appropriately and recognize why early support matters.
The same is true of drug and alcohol testing.
A program may explain when testing will occur, but employees, supervisors and managers also need to understand what testing can and cannot tell us, why it is used and how it fits within the broader workplace safety program.
When people understand the reasons behind a policy, they are better equipped to make informed decisions and apply it consistently.
For three months, your organization will receive access to one existing FFD Learning course for an agreed-upon group within your workplace.
*We can help you choose the course that best fits your needs.
There is no minimum enrollment. Together, we will identify an appropriate group within your workplace to participate in the three-month program.
For the three-month no-fee program, we will work with you to identify an appropriate group within your organization. This may be a specific site, department, business unit, job group, supervisor group, or another defined segment of your workplace.
The goal is to give your organization enough participation to meaningfully experience the program without requiring a full-company rollout. The final participant group and number will be agreed upon with FFD Learning before the program begins.
The purpose is not to turn employees into experts in legislation or drug testing. It is to give people enough background to understand workplace risks, understand the policy, and understand their own responsibilities.
The specific topics depend on the course you select. Across the FFD Learning course library, education may include:
A workplace policy can set expectations. Education provides the understanding behind those expectations.
Employees are in a better position to make informed decisions when they understand not only what the policy says, but why it says it and how it relates to their work.
Supervisors and managers also need more than a copy of the policy. They are often the people employees approach with questions and the people expected to respond when concerns arise.
Policies, testing requirements and legal obligations differ between industries, jurisdictions and countries.
The need for people to understand the policies they work under does not.
FFD Learning focuses on the underlying science of substance use, workplace risk, employee understanding, and the reasons behind workplace alcohol and drug policies.
These are relevant to safety-sensitive workplaces across Canada, the United States and other countries, including the United Kingdom, Australia and New Zealand.
Policies, legislation, testing requirements and workplace practices vary between countries, industries and jurisdictions.
The education is not intended to replace an organization's own policy or jurisdiction-specific requirements.
Instead, it helps employees, supervisors and managers understand the why behind those policies and expectations.
The requirements may differ. The need for people to understand them does not.
A test should not be the first time an employee meaningfully engages with your workplace policy.
